Vivid
soundscapes infused with texture and meaning, Mushroom Giant is
an Australian band specialising in dramatic instrumental music.
Mushroom
Giant’s live performances offer an aural and visual experience
that transcends the conventional 4-piece rock band, exploring an
instrumental realm full of colour and imagery and have taken the
show to audiences in Sydney, Adelaide and rural Victoria and are
currently organising a European tour for 2009.
The band
has experienced a meandering evolution from a contemporary 3-piece
orchestra (C3PO) thrashing out loud and distorted riffs into something
more psychedelic with the David Lynch inspired Rails album.
The 4-piece
was settled serendipitously in 2003 via an unlikely camping experience
in The Grampians National Park, in western Victoria. Since then
David Charlton (guitar), Craig Fryers (bass/bowed bass), Trent Horwood
(drums) and Simon Wade (guitar/piano) have brought to life a thriving
family of thoughtfully crafted songs – a compelling mesh of
dynamic musicianship and imaginative themes.
By 2006
Mushroom Giant was performing regularly with leading Melbourne bands
and in September of that year released the Graven Image EP and recorded
most of the Kuru album before ending the year with a captivating
performance at Phillip Island’s Pyramid Rock Festival on NYE,
with the likes of Silverchair, The Living End, Brant Bjork and Evermore.
A 44-minute
EP entitled Woman Heroin was then released in May 2007 featuring
a selection of songs including two live tracks recorded at The East
Brunswick Club and an improvised performance recorded during one
inspired rehearsal session.
Kuru
was released in February 2008 offering an engrossing listening experience;
a 60-minute journey through up-tempo grooves and intricately-layered
soundscapes to dark, cavernous compositions and bone-shaking riffs.
The album was written combining the scientific theory of a cannibalistic
human ancestory with a fictional tale of a 4,000 year old vampire-esque
bisexual female living in modern day Manhattan (courtesy of acclaimed
author Whitley Strieber). The name Kuru derives from a
disease one may or may not get from consuming the proteins one’s
own species.
Kuru
promises to be worth a listen – headphones, beanbag, lavalamp,
etc. not included.
"Intrigued. Great rollicking piece of nu-prog.
Look forward to hearing more..."

Richard Kingsmill, Triple J
"The
guitarists complement each other with wonderfully expressive, layered
guitar playing while the rhythm section gives each song amazing
depth and density. Songs like Pigeons and Autumn Leaves The Dead
are beautiful, haunting compositions"
- Beige Baron, Beat Magazine
"Cannibals,
vampires and lesbians. Imagination is an honoured guest at Mushroom
Giant's dinner table and an open mind is a must..."
- James Ridley, Beat Magazine
